Discover Lake Refuge.

Start from scratch.

I’m inviting you on a journey through the creation of my current series, Lake Refuge.

An idea for a book or series always has to start with the inspirational element that makes me want to write it in the first place. In the case of Lake Refuge, I reached back into my childhood and dusted off memories of family summer vacations in the town of Twin Lakes, CO located at the base of Independence Pass. I want to begin by saying this series is based on my childhood memories of this off-beat, beautiful, serene location and any resemblance to actual persons, living or dead is entirely coincidental – wow, does that sound like a disclaimer, or what??

Anyway, across the lake from the town of Twin Lakes, you can find the remains of an actual hotel and miscellaneous resort buildings. History has it that the Interlaken Resort was considered the most beautiful resort in the late 19th century. It was a popular spot to stay as people traveled to the mining towns of Leadville and Aspen. Can you believe Aspen was once considered a mere mining town? Anyway, after the turn of the century, the first Twin Lakes dam was constructed making sections of the lake shallow and stagnant. Fear of contracting malaria and other diseases caused visitors to reconsider their options for lodging, and eventually, the Interlaken Resort closed.

To be continued…

The original community of Twin Lakes is listed in the National Register of Historic Places since 1974. Twin Lakes is still a thriving town catering to travelers and tourists on their way north to Leadville or west over Independence Pass. I will be revisiting this quaint town for ideas to weave into my fictional town of Lake Refuge.

More.

As I progress through my books, I’ll be adding happy tidbits of research.

Until next time.

Blessings to you, my dear friends. Check back often to see what’s new!!
